Kara can eat fruit that she gathers, however meat fills her stamina bars more effectively, so this means Kara needs to hunt. If Kara loses all stamina to hunger she will begin to starve to death, meaning the player will have to adapt and live off the land. The stamina bar depletes as Kara starts to grow hungry and the way to refill this bar is to eat. There are two bars in the top left of the screen displaying Kara’s health bar, stamina bar and a quick access item menu.

All these important things need to be factored in when navigating the ocean, as once the boat sinks, Kara loses everything built on her boat and if she is too far away from shore her stamina will deplete from swimming and resulting in drowning. Players must also be aware of their surroundings such as sharp edged rocks or the luring colourful coral reefs that can also sink the boat. There are also a range of marine life which will have the player thinking of what types of defences they need to build. Wind, currents and giant waves are just some of the things that will test Kara on the open ocean. The player will grow through different situations to gain their bearings and use their progressing experience to battle Mother Nature. There was not a time that felt identical while sailing as the wave and wind physics are incredible. Like real sailing vessels, the player can control momentum with the direction their sails are cast by tightening and loosening them and controlling speed by lowering and raising of their sails. Traversing the ocean relies on wind direction and where the play has their sails facing. Starting from the basic grass canoe, building to your fantasy floating stronghold where the player can build anything from drying racks to hull armour. As your main necessity to travel island-to-island the player must gather resources such as grass, bamboo or wood and build up your boat. Windbound sets itself apart from other survival games by the player not focusing on building and fortifying a base but Kara’s boat. No crew, no food and no idea of what the islands hold, Windbound leads the player on an adventure exploring each beautiful island in the search for knowledge, Kara’s ancestral past and her lost crewmembers. From there Kara is transported to an island where she is washed ashore with only a knife and the clothes on her back. Kara’s soul is then transported to another world, empty void that feels unearthly, illuminated by a glowing whirlpool that draws her in with whispering echoes. Our protagonist Kara begins her story as a storm-ravaged ocean punishes her boat and she is knocked overboard by the evil this world has to offer, slowly drowning as she watches her crew sail away. Windbound demands that the players gets comfortable, turn on your surround sound or plug in your headset and immerse themselves in everything this survival adventure has to offer. The vast ocean is littered with gorgeous islands and unique wildlife where the player can sail around on a boat built from their own creativity. The player takes the role of Kara who starts with next to nothing but develops by gaining knowledge and resources by exploring the beautiful deep blue oceans and islands. The graphics of this title are genuinely stunning, using an animated 3D style in which the survival genre is lacking and is refreshing on the eyes.

Windbound is a graphically lush open world survival adventure brought to you by Brisbane based developer, 5 Lives Studios.
